If you smell gas, here's what to do until help arrives

Natural gas smells like rotten eggs. It's an unpleasant odor added intentionally to this odorless gas to help you identify and respond to a dangerous gas leak quickly.

If you smell a strong gas odor: leave immediately and call us from another location. Extinguish all candles, cigarettes, etc. immediately. Make sure you don't operate or touch anything that might cause a spark such as light switches, TVs, computers, telephones, or other appliance switches on the way out. Wait to use cell phones until you have left the house.

If you smell a faint gas odor: Make sure all gas appliances and the burners on your stove are turned off completely. Open one or more windows and wait a few minutes for the gas odor to dissipate before investigating further.

After waiting several minutes, check the pilot lights on your gas appliances (furnace, water heater, stove and oven, etc.) Don't attempt to relight a pilot light if you don't feel confident that you know all the steps required to do so safely.

If the source of the odor is not readily apparent, call Rock Energy Cooperative. We will dispatch a gas technician immediately to locate and deal with the source of the leak.
